Michael (Mick) Collins, 75 years old and is from England. He lived in Scotland for 26 years with his wife Pam, before moving to São Brás de Alportel in 2010.

He has 2 sons and 1 daughter. His eldest son and his daughter both live in São Brás.

Michael and Pam were married in 1967. Pam worked as a British civil servant and Michael worked in Forestry Commission. Michael was also employed erecting TV antenna, worked for the British railways and he was also a lorry driver. Other employment included making Clarks shoes, selling life insurance and office equipment, as well as working as a metal engineer.

Michael and Pam moved to Scotland when Michael was 42. Pam was relocated there through her Government position. At that time the two sons were in the British Army and their daughter worked in a Bank. Michael sold tractor parts and then worked in communications for the Government, before retiring at the age of 59.

While in Scotland they bought a Motorhome and drove to Portugal for the winter, as it was the warmest place in Europe. They stayed in Fuseta and did this for 9 years.

While in Scotland Michael became a Christian and during their visit to Portugal they attended the International Evangelical Church of the Algarve in Vale Judeu. They supported the new pastor at the church and decided to sell their house in Scotland and move permanently to São Brás de Alportel, in 2010. They only visited São Brás a couple of times during their visits to the Algarve but knew it was the place for them. Michael said “we bought the first house we viewed and as a Christian, I don´t believe in coincidences.” In São Brás they came across the Salvation Army (Christian Community Help) and helped to combine their efforts with the church in Vale Judeu. The church supports the Salvation Army by collecting goods for São Brás.

When they first arrived in Portugal they couldn’t speak the language, but had no problem with the integration with the locals and their Portuguese neighbours, who are all very kind. 2 years after moving to São Brás Pam was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Michael looked after her. The Salvation Army helped when Pam needed a wheelchair and also arranged a hospital bed to use in the house when Pam became very ill. Pam passed away in September 2016. 8 weeks after Pams passing Michael became blind and there is no cure for his condition.

Michael has 2 rescued dogs and one of his neighbours helps Michael walk his dogs every night. Michael appreciates the people in São Brás, they are very friendly and the town is very clean. The only negative points are that when some people walk their dogs they don’t pick up their dogs mess, and some people don´t put rubbish in the bins, but leave it by the side. These both create a hazard for a blind person. The new red path is very good with its different textured surfaces, which assists Michael when he´s out and about.

The local cultural programme is very diverse but usually starts very late in the evening, in his opinion. Michael and Pam were members of the Amigos do Museu and used to attend the Jazz concerts. They appreciated the New Orleans Jazz. Michael has sponsored 2 jazz concerts with his friend Shirley Blackman, in collaboration with the Amigos do Museu to support community projects. One was to help buy an instrument for a local university student and help towards the Amigos stage acquisition and the other, also with New Orleans jazz band, was to sponsor the Salvation Army to top up their funds. This was a way of saying thank you to the town that has received them so well.

In Michael’s free time he attends Scottish dancing in Moncarapacho, he goes to the gym, listens to music and attends church. He belongs to the church committee which has 3 pastors which are all from Ireland and they all speak Portuguese. They organise activities like a summer youth camp with 100 children and youths attending each year over 3 weeks in the summer. The church also organises a Christmas recreation of Bethlehem Village with animals and 40 volunteer actors, all members of the church.

Michael would be very grateful when people see him out and about, to go over to him, shake his hand and say hello, as when people just wave to him, he obviously can´t see them.
